The Pittsburgh Steelers and wide receiver Diontae Johnson agreed on a two-year contract extension for the talented wideout. The contract was out of character for a Steelers front office but you have to applaud new general manager Omar Khan in finding a way to get the deal done in a way that both sides are happy with the outcome.
As for Johnson, only getting a two-year extension means he is going to be eligible to hit the free-agent market after the 2024 season, hopefully with an even stronger resume. Having said that, when Johnson spoke to the media, he made it clear he loves playing for the Steelers and wants to retire a Steeler.
“I love being a Steeler, I love it here,”I want to finish my career here. Just being around my teammates and being around the atmosphere, and the energy that they show every day.”
Johnson is coming off of his best season in 2021. Johnson hauled in 107 passes for 1,161 receiving yards, both of which led the Steelers. Johnson was given a big raise based more on potential than production. Hopefully this motivates Johnson to step up and be the true No. 1 receiver the team lacks.
