The M1 was closed in both directions for over an hour overnight after police were called to reports of a woman on the motorway bridge on the wrong side of the railings.
The M1 was closed J43 to J44 on the Northbound side near Rothwell, and J45 to J44 on the Southbound side from around 1am last night. West Yorkshire Police said negotiators were able to stop the woman from jumping.
The motorway fully reopened around 4.30am.
A police spokesperson said: "At 1.03am today (30/07), police received a number of calls raising concerns for a woman on the wrong side of the railings on a bridge over the M1 at Junction 44.
"Emergency services attended and a road closure was put in place. Force negotiators were deployed, and the woman was brought to safety at around 3.30am and the motorway was reopened short after."
