Desperate rescue operation as 18-month-old baby gets stuck down 500ft well

An 18-month-old infant was rescued and pulled to safety by army officials, after being stuck down a 500 ft well.

The baby, identified as Shivan Badhel, is reportedly alive after a successful army rescue operation which lasted 40 minutes, on 7 June, in Dudapur village, located in western India's Gujarat region.

The baby fell 20ft down the 500ft-deep well at around 8 pm on Tuesday while playing alone near a hut on a farm where his family work as agricultural labourers.

In the footage, a thick piece of rope can be seen hanging down a tunnel which appears to go underground.

As multiple members of the Indian army surround the area, the baby can be heard crying and screaming in distress.

A member of the rescue team then gradually pulls the rope towards the top of the well, using all his strength others then join in to help.

The baby's cries can be heard getting louder as the end of the rope slowly reaches ground level.

Suddenly, a head emerges and the rescue team quickly grapple to pull the infant out.

Reports say that the Dhrangadhra Taluka Police were notified about a stranded baby and informed the army shortly after who then immediately came to the rescue.

The baby is alive and healthy but currently under observation at a hospital where he was reunited with family members.

It is believed that the 18-month-old was playing nearby when it fell down the borewell, a vertically drilled well used to extract water, at 35ft deep.

Mukesh Patel, the sub-divisional magistrate of Dhrangadhra, told The Indian Expres s that the Army rescuers team reached the well at around 9:45 pm.

He continued: "They lowered a hook tied to a rope in the borewell. They managed to trap the boy's T-shirt in the hook and then gently pulled him out of the 500-foot-deep borewell.

"The Army team managed to pull the boy out of the borewell within 45 minutes after reaching the spot."
