A man spray painted penises on potholes across a city in Malta in order to bring local officials attention to them so that they would fix the holes.
The phallic symbols appeared Friday morning all over San Ġwann, varying in shapes and sizes depending on the size of the pothole. The man told the Times of Malta that it was his desperate attempt to draw attention to the issue.
"This way they cannot ignore them. They'll have to fix the pothole to remove the penises," the unnamed man told the outlet. "At least this way, people can also notice them and understand that they are a hazard to motorists, especially motorbikes, particularly after rainfall, when most of them fill up with water and become harder for drivers to spot and avoid."
It appears that the tactic may have been a success though, as Infrastructure Malta CEO Steve Ellul told the Times of Malta that the business will be partnering with the city to fill the holes after discussing the issue with Mayor Dominic Cassar.
Photos of the spray-painted penis shared to social media were largely celebrated by users who applauded the man for taking the matter into his own hands.
"What a good idea," one user commented on Instagram. "That's one way of drawing attention to the issue. Good thinking," another wrote.
The Maltese man's idea is not the first of its kind however. In 2021, a New Zealand man spray-painted neon green penises to circle potholes, bringing attention to the issue for both drivers and city officials, as reported by Vice.
An anonymous artist did the same thing in 2015 in Manchester, England. The potholes were filed and the penises were removed in a matter of days, the BBC reported at the time.
