Past decades are always some of the best references when creating color schemes, filled with nostalgic inspiration for a retro spin on modern design, and the 1980s is a go-to when it comes to capturing a colorful, more-is-more aesthetic.
Interior designers say that 1980s interior design trends are making a comeback in 2025, especially its most iconic color trends, from neon pinks to rich greens. 'In 2025, design is all about self-expression, and we’re seeing a shift toward vibrant, personality-filled spaces where color plays a huge role in setting the mood,' says designer Nadia Watts.
To provide you with some bold, playful, and color-centric inspiration, we've rounded up five retro color trends inspired by the '80s that designers are championing for the year ahead. While bold hues take center stage, the '80s also offer neutral color inspiration for a more restrained interior scheme, as designers explain below.
1. Terracotta

Terracotta decor feels aligned with core '80s color trends, working as the neutral color to ground the loud hues of this era. Here, designer Jennie Bishop of Bishop Studio explains how to style this '80s-inspired color stylishly without feeling outdated:
'The 1980s are making a serious comeback in interiors, and this space is proof that retro can feel fresh, not kitschy. Warm terracotta, dusty mauves, and golden ochres – all classic ‘80s hues – are reimagined here with rich textures, bold patterns, and an artsy wall treatment that feels totally custom.
'The curved chaise lounge? Peak ‘80s glam, but in a way that feels inviting rather than over-the-top. Layer in woven textiles and sculptural brass lighting, and you’ve got a space that nods to the past while feeling effortlessly modern.'
2. Soft pinks

Similarly, soft interpretations of decorating with pink are a gentle way to nod to '80s decor. 'For 2025, I see a return to block colors, particularly soft pinks, and deep greens, both of which nod to the '80s but feel completely fresh when used in a modern setting,' explains interior designer Melissa Read, creative director at Studio Burntwood.
'Soft pinks – not sugary pastels – but more muted, earthy shades, are becoming a popular choice for upholstery and even wall colors in contemporary spaces,' the designer adds.
Much like terracotta, soft plaster pinks used on the walls can reflect a subtle retro look without overwhelming a room with bold hues. Here, Benjamin Moore's Desert View is used on the walls, teamed with Bluebelle on the trim for added interest.
3. Forest green

Dark shades of forest green and teal both feel reminiscent of the richly layered interiors of the '80s, but these timeless colors can take on a modern form for 2025 decorating, suggests Melissa Read:
'Forest greens are another key shade making a return, particularly in kitchens, studies, and even bedrooms. A deep, grounding green adds character without being overwhelming, and when paired with warm neutrals or brass accents, it feels classic yet contemporary.
'To use these colors successfully, I’d suggest incorporating them in large, confident blocks on walls, cabinetry, or upholstery, rather than as small accent pops, to create a more intentional and sophisticated look.'
4. Purple

Purple room ideas have been having a major resurgence lately, but it's a bold color that feels innately linked to the decadent glamor of '80s design. In modern design, this confident hue feels playful and unexpected – an excellent color choice for maximalist color schemes.
'Purple is making a big comeback this year,' says designer Alexis Warren of Alexis Warren Designs. 'I have seen it in all of my fabric and wallpaper presentations recently. A pop of purple can pack an unexpected, exciting punch! My biggest tip would be to not shy away from it – start adding it in smaller doses to your rooms to create a color story around your house. It is a really versatile color that complements any room – there are so many variations.'
5. Neon pink

Lastly, we can't overlook neons as a key color of the '80s, and interior designer Nadia Watts sees them making their way into modern homes again, especially neon pinks:
'Neon pink was such an iconic color in the '80s – it was everywhere, from fashion and graphic design to pop culture, bringing this fun, rebellious energy that defined the era. But what’s exciting is how it's making a bold return in today’s interiors, not just as a nostalgic nod but as a fresh statement of individuality.
'I love that people are getting more adventurous with their spaces, and neon pink is a perfect way to add that playful, nostalgic touch while still feeling fresh and modern. Whether it’s through bold artwork, statement furniture, or unexpected accents, it’s all about creating a space that feels exciting and uniquely personal.
'If you're looking to add a pop of color to your space, consider using bright neon pink in your modern art! Whether it's through bold abstract paintings or fun framed graphic prints, this vibrant hue is a fantastic way to bring some '80s flair into your home without making any big, permanent changes.'
Whether you favor the brown-pink neutrals that acted as the base of many '80s schemes or the bold and colorful tones that feel playful, there's much to love about these retro hues that can add plenty of character to your home in 2025.
