Designer Kurt Geiger store set to close on Nottingham's 'most expensive shopping street'

A luxury shoe shop will be closing its doors in Nottingham next year. Kurt Geiger will be leaving Bridlesmith Gate after more than 15 years of selling stylish shoes and accessories to the city's fashionistas.

The company is taking advantage of a break option in its lease. The shop, which opened in 2005, will close at the end of January and is already being advertised as 'to let' from February 1, 2023. The pedestrian street has been considered the most expensive shopping street in Nottingham, attracting designer brands such as Hugo Boss and Ted Baker, and department store Flannels, Fred Perry and Joules.

Despite the Nottingham closure, Kurt Geiger is busy opening further branches. Earlier this year shops opened at Meadowhall and The Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol. It comes after after Kurt Geiger boss Neil Clifford said he planned to open a new shoe shop every month after its charity initiatives throughout the pandemic won it customers at home and abroad.

The decline and knock-on effect of the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre closing and the pandemic have seen a number of closures along Bridlesmith Gate in the last few years. Brands such as Cath Kidston, Office, Moda in Pelle, Urban Decay and Jones Bootmaker have vanished.

However, the street has enjoyed a recent revival thanks to property developer Arran Bailey, managing director of ALB Group who acquired 11 properties to let at more affordable prices with shorter lease periods.

Developers hope it will soon become Nottingham's answer to London's famous Carnaby Street, with an ambition to make the area 'cool again'.

New arrivals taking up empty units include coffee shop Barista Lab, fashion boutique Stick & Ribbon and Aura art gallery. Fashion stores 18 Montrose and Sneakrverse have also signed deals to extend their leases

Oliver Marshall, associate director at FHP Property Consultants, said there had already been a number of inquiries about the Kurt Geiger shop, which has only just been advertised. He said: "It's a really nice attractive unit. The street has had a number of changes recently but it's still in a good position."
