Designer coat worth £18,000 mocked for looking like a 'giant feather duster'

Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder, with even the most glamorous of red carpet gowns being very much a matter of personal taste at times.

Now a luxurious coat worth £18,000 has divided shoppers, with some believing it looks far more suited to an afternoon of household dusting than the catwalks of Milan.

The opulent clothing item - simply called Coat - has come from designers at high-end Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta, and has proven popular with fashion critics and shoppers alike.

Such is the demand that just one of the shearling coats is left to buy in the UK, with fashionistas gushing over the lambskin padded tails and choice of two distinctive colours.

Available in sizes six to twelve, the unique jacket comes with a choice of accompanying scarves to complete the look, including a £620 thin scarf with large furry gloves attached, and a £3,320 scarf that reflects the coat's luxurious fluffiness.

With a high neck fit and furry arms draped on top of one another, the coat is finished with a hooked closure and is styled by a Bottega Veneta model wearing PVC trousers and black, chunky-soled boots.

Being well out of the range of most people's monthly pay packets, one thrifty person remarked that they’d certainly grab it if they spotted it during a charity shop splurge, but couldn't justify the eye-popping price.

Others have been decidedly less than enthusiastic about the creative design, likening it to household cleaning products or even just a big piece of fruit.

One witty shopper by the name of Kate Winder commented that the design would be perfect for household cleaning, joking, “If I could just get her to roll around the corners of my lounge, that would be great".

Another fashion fan, named Karen Adie, jested, “for when you’re hitting the club but first, you need to get those hard-to-reach cobwebs".

Other harsh critics remarked that the coat resembled a piece of fruit, with a woman named Cynthia Moore deadpanning, “I too want to look like a furry strawberry".

A fourth person, Carole-Anne Mills, said that she was certain the coat was actually some sort of fruit but couldn’t decide whether it looked more like a raspberry or a tomato.
