Design team appointed as part of £8million Enniskillen theatre refurbishment

Progress has been made as part of the £8million refurbishment of the Ardhowen Theatre in Enniskillen.

A design team has been appointed for the project, which is expected to lead to the temporary closure of the Co Fermanagh theatre later this year.

The design of the 36-year-old listed building will be led by Hall McKnight Architects, with the local council saying it will enhance the visitor experience and provide new opportunities for artists and audiences.

Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cllr Barry McElduff said: “I am delighted that the Design Team has been appointed to commence the refurbishment works at the Ardhowen Theatre.

“The Ardhowen has been such an iconic building on the shores of Lough Erne for 36 years. A very important aspect of our physical and cultural landscape.

“The Ardhowen is a major hub for the arts throughout County Fermanagh, the wider Council area, and beyond. It provides a space for the local community and visitors to access and enjoy quality arts and cultural experiences.

“The Council is committed to providing access to arts, culture, and heritage for residents and visitors. They are important elements of community life and key social and economic drivers.

“The refurbishment of the Ardhowen will enhance the opportunities to enjoy the arts today and in the future.”

The architects are expected to bring forward potential designs for the new theatre, with this phase of the refurbishment expected to be completed by March, with work to begin by summer.
