Deshaun Watson's Achilles Injury Clouds Future With Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson recently underwent surgery after re-rupturing his Achilles tendon for the second time in three months, potentially sidelining him for the entire 2025 season. The injury occurred when Watson experienced discomfort in his ankle after rolling it while in Miami, which led to the revelation of the re-rupture during a player-exit meeting on Sunday.

Following tests confirming the injury, the Browns announced that Watson is expected to miss a significant amount of time in the upcoming season. This setback raises questions about Watson's future with the team, as he is still owed $92 million from a fully guaranteed $230 million contract signed in 2022.

General manager Andrew Berry acknowledged Watson's setback earlier in the week, indicating that the team is assessing the situation. The 29-year-old quarterback initially suffered the Achilles injury in October and underwent surgery shortly after. Despite ongoing rehabilitation efforts, Watson faced another setback while away from the team.

The Browns have insurance coverage for Watson's contract, allowing them to recoup some funds and gain salary-cap relief if he misses the entire season. Prior to the second surgery, uncertainties surrounded Watson's tenure in Cleveland, given the team's substantial investment in him and his previous injury history.

Watson's on-field performance has been marred by injuries, including a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023 and subpar play in the recent season before the Achilles re-rupture. The Browns utilized multiple quarterbacks throughout the season, with Bailey Zappe starting in the final game against Baltimore.

With a 3-14 record, the Browns secured the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft. They are likely to target a quarterback, with top prospects such as Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward in consideration. Additionally, the team plans to explore options for acquiring a veteran quarterback through free agency or trades.

Looking ahead, Berry hinted at changes in the quarterback room for the next season, emphasizing the need for a revamped approach to the position. The Browns aim to address their quarterback situation decisively as they prepare for the upcoming season.
