The NFL has launched an investigation into a recent civil lawsuit filed against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The lawsuit alleges that Watson committed sexual assault in 2020 while he was playing for the Houston Texans. A woman in Texas claims that Watson forced himself on her during an incident at her apartment four years ago and is seeking $1 million in damages.

The league spokesperson stated that they are reviewing the complaint under the personal conduct policy but have not placed Watson on the commissioner's exempt list as no formal charges have been filed yet. The exempt list allows the NFL to place a player on paid leave while their case is being reviewed.

Watson, who is in his third season with the Browns, previously faced suspension and fines in 2022 after multiple women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions. He settled most of the civil lawsuits brought against him before being disciplined by the league.

It is unclear whether Watson disclosed the new allegation to the league or the Browns before the lawsuit was filed. The team stated that they will respect the legal process and follow the NFL's guidelines regarding the civil suit.

Despite his legal issues and a shoulder injury that limited his playing time last season, Watson is expected to start in the upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed confidence in Watson's abilities and stated that he has played at a high level throughout his career.

In other news, the Browns have signed wide receiver Kadarius Toney to their practice squad, providing experienced depth to the team. Additionally, cornerback Justin Hardee Sr. and wide receiver Tulu Griffin were released from the practice squad.

Overall, Watson's future with the Browns remains uncertain as he navigates through the latest legal challenges while striving to perform at his best on the field.
