DeSantis says Trump's indictments hurt GOP's chances in race

DeSantis believes Trump's legal issues have damaged the Republican Party.

GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis recently expressed concerns about the legal issues plaguing former President Donald Trump, stating that they have had a negative impact on the Republican Party. During an interview with CBS News on Thursday, the Florida governor discussed Trump's various indictments and the repercussions they could have on the upcoming race.

DeSantis emphasized the importance of democracy, stating, 'It's a republic, it's not a monarchy. Everyone has a right to be able to run.' While acknowledging that Trump could potentially win the primary, DeSantis expressed skepticism about his chances in the general election. Confident in his own abilities, DeSantis asserted, 'I can [win].'

Expressing his desire for a different scenario, DeSantis remarked, 'If I could have one thing change, I wish Trump hadn't been indicted on any of this stuff.' He went on to criticize the handling of the cases, particularly highlighting individuals like Alvin Bragg and their intentions in prosecuting Trump. DeSantis believed that such action distorted the concept of justice and had a profound impact on the primary race as well.

When asked if the legal challenges had actually strengthened Trump, DeSantis acknowledged that it may have had some effect. He explained, 'Both that, but then it also just crowded out, I think, so much other stuff, and it sucked out a lot of oxygen.' This distortion and focus on legal issues may have made it more challenging for DeSantis and other Republican candidates to effectively convey their platforms and gain public attention during the primary campaign.

The impact of Trump's legal woes on the Republican Party cannot be discounted. It has left many party members grappling with how best to navigate the future, as they attempt to balance loyalty to the former president with their individual political aspirations. The legal battles have also overshadowed other key issues and policy discussions, diverting attention away from the broader conservative agenda.

As the 2024 presidential race begins to take shape, candidates like Ron DeSantis are left contemplating the implications of Trump's legal troubles. While DeSantis remains confident in his own ability to secure victory, he acknowledges the challenges posed by the distortions caused by Trump's legal situation. It remains to be seen how these issues will shape the primary and general election campaigns, and what impact they will have on the overall trajectory of the Republican Party.
