Derry tour company becomes a family affair with father and son duo

A Derry walking tour company has gained a new tour guide, none other than the son of the company's founder, David Douglas.

Derrie Danders has a wide array of tours exploring the city's past.

Walkers can enjoy tours that explore some of the city's hidden history, with a Wonders of the Waterside tour, a blue plaque tour, a music history tour and a shirt factories tour - just to name a few.

David has taken groups from across the globe around Derry, which was all made possible after completing the Level 2 Award in Tour Guiding several years ago at the North West Regional College.

Now, David has a new touring star on board, his son James.

James recently completed the same course his dad completed years previously, and will help his dad take tours around the city before heading off to university.

David spoke to MyDerry about how it feels to have his son on board with his business.

He said: "James has helped me out with some big groups in the past and as a keen photographer he would have come round taking photos.

"He probably knows my Walls tour pretty well and has helped test the audio tours. James took the NWRC course as a general interest with the option to help me and perhaps something he could use at university too depending on where he ends up.

"I recently took a trip for a group of guides in the city and James did a 20 minute section about St Columba which was his assessment tour for the Level 2 course and was well received.

"At this stage James will not guide groups on his own as he will need to get his own insurance but he can take sections of tours under my supervision. He sits his A levels shortly so that will be his focus for now."

James told MyDerry : "Well it is nice to follow in the family footsteps and to have someone so experienced help you learn when you're starting out.

"Also, it is great to be able to work with someone who is so passionate and knowledgeable about local history."

In a social media post, the North West Regional College congratulated James on his new achievement.

They said: "David Douglas, proprietor of Derrie Danders Walking and Audio Tours completed the Level 2 Award in Tour Guiding several years ago and went on to set up his very successful business.

"Recently, David’s son has completed the same course and is now working with his father before he heads off to University. David presented his son with his Tour Guiding certificate over the weekend."
