Derry's young people helping to combat mental health stigma through new youth project

A group of young people in Derry are taking part in a new programme to address the mental health of the youth of the city.

Studio 2, which is based in Skeoge Industrial Estate, are working with the Education Authority on a mental health and wellbeing project.

So far the initiative has managed to secure placements for three part-time youth work assistants to work with the young people.

The programme will see those taking part tackle Derry’s mental health crisis in two parts.

The first will be through a new mental health forum called “The Ballyarnett Youth Mental Health Forum” where they will identify local services that tackle a range of issues faced by young people throughout the city.

“Spill The Tae” will also be launched soon, which will be a youth-led podcast with the first season dedicated to mental health and wellbeing.

A spokesperson for Studio2 told MyDerry : "Sometimes it is easier for young people to be open about their issues to peers rather than an adult.

"[The participants] will host TED talk style conferences, having guest speakers with topics like personal experiences, local services and inspirational speakers. We will use the skillset and experience at Studio2 to create high-quality productions and live broadcasts so that these will have a wide reach.

"Young people will interview their peers as well as special guests discussing topics that matter to young people. The podcast team have already been working very hard on designing their show and learning skills in creating podcasts including production, sound engineering and editing."
