Derry's Bronagh Burke of "Memory of Me" opens up about losing husband and father, managing grief and new podcast

When you're a young, fit and healthy married couple, it's not often that the thought of dying crosses your mind.

The concept often seems so far on the horizon that it's swept under the carpet.

But it does happen. All of the time. And it's something Derry woman Bronagh Burke knows all too well about.

Bronagh, 31, has been navigating grief since the loss of her husband, Thomas "Burkey" Burke.

Ms Burke battled to try to save her 29-year-old partner after he suffered a massive heart attack at their Derry home on April 23, 2020.

They were a young couple living their life and it was entirely unforeseen that Bronagh would lose Thomas so soon.

The inspirational mum-of-two had already been dealing with a great loss after her father, Colum Deehan, who was only 51-years-old, died suddenly on February 27 2015.

Nearly two years later, Bronagh is a voice for those navigating grief, attracting 21.8K followers on Instagram with posts highlighting her grief and talking about her journey in the most transparent way.

And now, to help people "open up and normalise grief", Ms Burke has started a new podcast series called 'Memory of Me' which aired its first episode today (February 9).

Speaking to MyDerry, Bronagh said she decided to start the 12-episode podcast after being unable to open up during the coronavirus pandemic.

After being on a "grief train" and "building a community" through social media, Ms Burke said she wanted to give others the oppournity to open up about their own journey, starting with her own mum, Siobhan Deehan on episode one.

"I don't know where the idea came from," Bronagh said. "It was sort of a light bulb moment for me but I truly believe I was tired of grief.

"I was getting so many messages and I thought to myself that these people deserve to have their own stories told themselves. So, I guess that's where the idea came from.

"I thought to myself that normal people should be given the support and platform to tell their stories and say it how it is. I'm trying to break the stigma towards grief."

Ms Burke's words surrounding grief itself were also poignant, adding that support services for people dealing with the loss of a loved one, especially during the pandemic, "just weren't there".

"There is so much that surrounds grief and it can be an uncomfortable conversation at times or maybe it's just too painful for people to open and truly express themselves.

"I wanted to be able to give people the opportunity to remember their loved ones. It takes a lot of love and pain to be able to express yourself when it comes to grief. It also takes a lot of courage to open up about losing someone that you loved dearly."

When coming up with the name of the podcast, Bronagh said it was something that "connected with her straight away".

"It didn't take me very long to come up with the name for the podcast," she said. "It came to me very quickly and I think that's because it's about honouring my daddy and husband's memory.

"But it's also about making a memory of ourselves because death will reach us all one day and it's nice to be able to have something to look back upon.

"People have been through so much these last two years themselves with Covid-19 and I just want people to be able to open up now and be able to speak their truth, they deserve the opportunity."

Bronagh added: "I know how much videos and photos I have of Burkey and my daddy means to me. It's nice to be able to hear their voices and see their faces again.

"I'm here now and I am doing my best to raise our two children, Adam and Aoife, and I will do everything to kept their daddy and granda's memory alive because they were amazing people. They were a huge part of my life and I don't want them to forget about them."
