Derry residents speak of frustration over controversial homes left half-built

Residents who have been left living next to an eyesore after a building development in the city was halted have started an online petition to get the site demolished.

People living in the Dunfield Terrace area say builders downed tools a number of years ago over legal issues and now they are worried they will be left with a half-finished house in the long term.

It's understood that planning permission was first granted through the former Department of the Environment before planning powers were transferred to local councils.

Felicity McCall, who is a local resident and lives close to the development, said the partially built construction "blights" "one of the most iconic views in Derry and that the whole situation had turned into a "farce".

Speaking to MyDerry, Ms McCall said the area was now a focal point for anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

She added: "Residents are really fed up with this now. We had to put up with this for a number of years and it's now come to a head.

"It's opened to the elements already and the fencing surrounding the developments has been knocked down and nobody has come out to fix it.

"We have contacted the council and they've said that unless it is a public danger they can not demolish the site.

"It is a magnet for vandals and it has become a focal point for very young people and the site is simply not safe."

"It's private property but just recently there was a young girl who hurt her arm pretty badly from being in one of those houses.

"The properties are so run down at this stage as well. The windows are all out, the doors are off and the roof is in a bad way.

"People who live in the street beside it can't even get oil because workers are having to climb fencing to give people their oil. Some companies have refused to come up this way anymore. It's terrible.

"There's not a person who arrives at our door who asks when that development across the street is being demolished. This is the third winter we've had to put up with.

"Residents have just had enough. The area of land that it was built on used to be a beautiful piece of land that a lot of tourists and media would've visited because it gave them a great view of the city.

"They don't come near this area anymore because of that site.

"We're starting to think that something seriously bad is going to have to happen to someone before something is done about this site and that just isn't fair.

"That's why we've started this petition because we won't stop until those development comes down once and for all."
