Derry people asked to spread hope by walking from 'Darkness into Light'

Derry people have been encouraged to register for the Darkness into Light event this May.

The walk, which hasn't taken place in its usual format for two years, will take place on May 7 at 4.15am in aid of Pieta House and Foyle Search and Rescue.

The annual walk was first started in 2009 in Dublin and now has over 200,000 participants in over 19 different countries.

Meanwhile, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, people still managed to wake up to walk and run in their own way from the darkness into the light and helped raise £25,000 for Foyle Search and Rescue.

A spokesperson for the Derry committee said they were hoping to break the £25,000 raised last year.

They added: "This year we can all get together again, join us on the 7th May at 4.15 am for the 5km walk/run starting at Sainsbury’s, to help raise awareness and raise funds for Pieta. Ending Suicide. Beginning Hope and Foyle Search and Rescue.

"Two very worthwhile charities, Pieta have a crisis centre in Letterkenny, and serves the whole of the North West including Derry, which accepts self referrals for anyone feeling suicidal or in crisis.

"This is an event where we all come together to remember all our loved ones lost to suicide and to give hope to those battling with their mental health. People taking part have described it as ‘very symbolic’ and find solace on the walk."

On March 20, the Derry committee will be holding an information session in Foyleside for people who would like to register, donate or chat.
