Derry Girls writer urges public votes for BAFTA TV award

Since Derry Girls season three aired last year, the cast and crew have received numerous prestigious awards and nominations.

The latest in a series of nominations is the BAFTA TV Memorable Moment Award, for the emotive finale looking back at the Good Friday Agreement.

It is the only BAFTA TV award that is decided by the public vote, and Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee has encouraged fans to get behind the team.

In a tweet, she said: "The only Bafta decided by public vote. We're up against some big hitters but if our finale was your tv moment of the year gis a vote."

Giving a snapshot of the scene which had been nominated, BAFTA said: "We join the gang as their coming of age coincides with the Good Friday Agreement referendum.

"Until this point in the show, the Troubles served as a backdrop to their everyday lives but here we see our beloved characters placing a vote for peace and stepping out of the polling station into an unknown future.

"These final scenes are intercut with archival footage of political figures such as SDLP leader and peacemaker John Hume alongside fellow Derry citizens at the euphoric moment it was announced that a resounding 71.1 per cent of people in Northern Ireland voted yes for the Agreement."

The Memorable Moment Award honours the impact of television in the UK and its power to entertain, inform and bring the nation together – looking back at key moments from 2022 that inspired and moved audiences at home.

Emma Baehr, Executive Director of Awards & Content at BAFTA, said: "The six moments we're sharing today capture what BAFTA stands for: creativity, innovation, and authenticity.

"The Memorable Moment Award spotlights the unforgettable scenes of the last year that truly resonated and inspired viewers at home, showcasing the impact of television. We are all looking forward to seeing what the public chooses on Sunday 14 May. Get voting!"

Voting will close at midday on May 2, 2023 and the winner will be announced at the BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises on May 14, 2023 on BBC One and iPlayer from 7pm.
