Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O'Donnell shuts down 'misogynistic' question on TV show

One of the Derry Girls refused to answer a chat show question about how old she is, blasting it as 'misogynistic'.

Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, who plays the rebellious Michelle in the hit Channel 4 sitcom set in Northern Ireland, was appearing on The Late Late Show in Ireland, Glasgow Live and the NME reports. During her time on the programme, host Ryan Tubridy quizzed O'Donnell about how old she actually is.

In the show, O'Donnell plays a character who has just completed her GCSEs, implying she is 15 or 16. Although her IMDB profile does not have her date of birth on there, it is reported that O'Donnell, who is a Derry native, was born in March 1992, making her 30 years old.

Tubridy prefaced the question with the notion that it "might be a rude question", before stating: "Can I ask how old you are?” O'Donnell then jokingly said she was 17, but "very, very wise" for her age.

Tubridy then asked the question again, saying "Would you consider telling me what age you are?" to which O’Donnell said: "This gets on my nerves a wee bit. It’s always quite misogynistic even if it’s not intentionally misogynistic, because men don’t get the same scrutiny."

Tubridy then said he would "definitely" ask a man the same thing, and stated that the "question" was a compliment given that she plays a teen "so well". The host then stated that "move on to something else, because I can read a mood when I see it", to which O’Donnell replied: "I was going to give you a hilarious anecdote, but go ahead."

The sitcom has been garnering strong reviews since the launch of the third and final season this month. The next episode of Derry Girls airs on Channel 4 at 9pm on Tuesday (April 26) and is also available to watch on All 4.
