Derry Girls creator reveals extra-special 'encore' episode will air after series finale

The creator of Derry Girls has announced they've prepared a very special way to end the final series.

Lisa McGee, writer and creator of the series, reveals that as well as airing the finale next month, there will also be an extra 45-minute extended episode, which is 15 minutes longer than the usual episodes, that will also be shown in the same week.

The extended episode will focus on a huge moment in Northern Irish history - a year on from the Good Friday Agreement.

The agreement on how Northern Ireland should be governed will clash with Orla and Erin's joint 18th birthday party and they fear their special day might be overshadowed.

Lisa said: "Like all the very best 90s bands, I couldn’t resist ending our farewell tour with an encore for our loyal fans."

Continuing, Lisa spoke about the special one-off episode: "The special deals with the historic and momentous Good Friday Agreement vote, which coincides with the gang’s coming of age, they enter adulthood just as Northern Ireland embarks on a new future."

The Channel 4 series first aired in January 2018, and is now is on series 3 due to popular demand, however this will be the final series.

It has been Channel 4's biggest comedy launch since 2004 and very popular with the viewers in Northern Ireland as it is the most-watched TV series in the last 20 years.

The creator pays homage to the much loved show: "What a journey it’s been. I’m so grateful Channel 4 gave me the space to end the stories of these characters that mean so much to me with this special. I really hope the fans love it as much as I do."

Although she has never denied that she may bring Derry Girls back to screens one day, Lisa also bids farewell to the series she created: "Derry people aren’t great at saying goodbye so I will instead use one of our native expressions ‘That’s us away now’."

The finale of Derry Girls will air on Tuesday 17 May at 9:15pm on Channel 4, and the extra special longer episode will also be airing in the same week.
