Derry GAA club left with "hefty repair bill" after facility is damaged

A popular Derry sports club has been left facing a "hefty repair bill" after part of their facility was vandalised this week.

Pictures have emerged showing fencing surrounding Doire Trasna's GAA ground had been crashed into and severely damaged.

The facility, which is based in the Top of the Hill area, officially opened its doors in July 2021.

The facility, which was undertaken on behalf of the Council, involved the upgrade of the existing playing pitches to provide a new grass, floodlit GAA football pitch, with modular changing facilities and associated site work, and the refurbishment of the existing all-weather multi-use pitch just off the Trench Road.

The vandalism comes as a devastating blow to the club and local community less than a year after keys were officially handed over.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the club wrote on Facebook: "Unfortunately, someone crashed into the perimeter fence of our grounds at Corrody road on Saturday night/early hours of Sunday morning and drove off.

"They have caused substantial damage to the fence and have left our membership with a hefty repair bill.

"If anyone knows who caused this could you ask them to get in touch with their preferred method of payment?"
