Derry clothing brand Storefront on breaking into US sphere

A Derry city centre clothing brand which started as an online marketplace is making preparations for their first USA pop-up.

Storefront has been turning heads on Derry's Waterloo Street since it moved there from Derry's Glassworks building.

The distinctive store is full of items you will not find anywhere else in the town. Walls decorated with their own brand as well as US and vintage stock, Storefront is ever-expanding its reach.

Now, the Storefront founders are taking their brand overseas, with a pop-up taking place in Chicago on January 21 and 22 alongside US brands Austen AG and Honore.

Speaking to MyDerry, Storefront co-founder Connor McKinney said: "It feels really rewarding to be able to create something locally and be able to get global representation for your efforts.

"Especially pertaining to Derry, we constantly got told when we started up that our business would do better if we were based in Belfast or Dublin but we always strived to reject that narrative and chose to bring something new to where we’re from, as opposed to having to be based elsewhere.

"So to be able to represent our hometown in another country and share its story is greatly appreciated and we wouldn’t be here without our supporters."

Storefront originated as a Facebook page where like-minded people discussed fashion. TV and film. Now it is one of the most recognisable independent businesses in the city, with people across Northern Ireland and beyond wearing their trademark merchandise.

In a previous conversation with MyDerry, Connor said: "This street is nothing but independent businesses, it is class. Next door you have got somebody that is doing their own thing and you can support one another.

"There is no better street than here I would say for sure in the town. The support has been phenomenal, especially during lockdown too everybody was texting us asking how are we getting on and we were getting on fine.

"It was probably just because we knew we had such a strong base here, that you would not want to be anywhere else."
