Dermot O'Leary gives rare parenting insight as he reveals strict rule for son

Dermot O'Leary gave This Morning viewers a rare insight into his life as a father during Wednesday's show.

The latest episode of the ITV daytime series began with Dermot, 49, and his co-host Alison Hammond tucking into bowls of sweets.

Father-of-one Dermot began: "Got some big news, some big national birthday news. A national treasure no less, turns 30 this weekend. Happy birthday Peppa Pig!"

But 47-year-old Alison was quick to correct him and shouted: "No it's not Peppa Pig, it's Percy Pig!"

Dermot looked red-faced and started laughing as he buried his head against Alison.

Alison then said: "It's the sweets of Percy Pig! Oh my God, I can't even believe you got that wrong!" as Dermot added: "Read more, think less!" referring to the autocue.

Alison repeated: "It's not Peppa Pig, it's Percy Pig!" as Dermot asked: "So, how old's Peppa?"

"Who knows!" Alison replied, seeing rather uninterested.

Dermot then admitted: "Do you know what it is? My son is obsessed with Peppa at the moment so I've got Peppa on the brain!"

Alison responded: "Is he? Yeah but is he obsessed with Percy Pigs? Because I love them!"

"He doesn't know that Percy Pigs exist yet!" Dermot replied, confirming that he and his wife Dee Koppang haven't given their two-year-old son the sweets as of yet.

Dermot and Dee, who married in 2012, welcomed their son Kasper in June 2020.

Back in September 202, Dermot discussed the difficulties he and his wife had in becoming parents, advising other couples not to 'lose hope'.

Speaking to Fabulous, Dermot gave words of encouragement to couples struggling to conceive after Dee previously admitted they had a 'rocky road' to becoming parents.

He said: "Don't lose hope. Just keep going and you'll find resolution one way or another, whether it's through adoption or IVF or whatever.

"Because if you really want to be a parent and you want to bring a kid up in a loving, nurturing and supportive household, then you should do your utmost to do so.

"And I know it's very easy to say these things, because none of that is science. But there are always ways," Dermot added.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
