Dermot Gallagher in St Mirren vs Celtic Ref Watch assessment as Jonah Ayunga handed 'lucky' verdict

Former top referee Dermot Gallagher reckons Jonah Ayunga got very lucky at St Mirren's second goal.

The ex-English Premier League official ran the rule over the Buddies' second goal as part of his Ref Watch segment on Sky Sports as Ange Postecoglou's men lost their 100 per cent start to the Premiership season and with that their long-standing unbeaten run that fell just one day short of stretching over a one year period.

Mark O'Hara and Ayunga grabbed the goals as Stephen Robinson's men caused a major shock in Scotland's top flight. The result was also a big boost to Rangers, who now sit just two points adrift of the champions after their weekend win over Dundee United. Joe Hart could be seen during the match making a loud case for a push on Stephen Welsh in the build-up to the second goal for the Saints. Dermot Gallagher has agreed with his assessment saying Ayunga got 'doubly lucky' with the ball also coming off his shoulder.

Reviewing the incident, the former top EPL whistler said: "I think he gets lucky. You can't see here but from the other angle he pushes [Stephen] Welsh in the back. He pushes him away. Joe Hart has the perfect view, he has the view the referee wants.

"I think if the referee has got that view you give a foul. It comes off his shoulder so he got doubly lucky.

Asked about VAR looking at the incident when it arrives in Scotland, he added: "It will all be reviewed but I think that will be disallowed."

Celtic return from the international break with a home clash against Motherwell before they take on RB Leipzig in Germany in the first of back-to-back Champions League showdowns with the Bundesliga side.

For St Mirren, it is a home meeting with Livingston as they look to back up their big result with another in front of their own support.
