Dermot Gallagher gives Rangers James Sands red card verdict after Ross County clash controversy

Former top referee Dermot Gallagher insists Don Robertson blundered by not sending James Sands off during Rangers’ win over Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday. The USA international hauled down Jordy Hiwula as the Staggies striker raced away on the break.

The game was scoreless at the time and Sands was already on an early booking but whistler Robertson didn’t even think he had committed a foul. But Gallagher reckons he got that one wrong and HAD to give him his marching orders.

Asked about the incident on his weekly Ref Watch slot on Sky Sports, Gallagher said: “The referee didn’t think it was a foul but if he gives a foul it’s a straight red card. At worst it would be a second yellow but the referee plays on so he doesn’t think it’s a foul but I actually do - I think it’s a foul and a straight red card.”

Ross County gaffer Malky Mackay was furious after the game and said: “Sands pulls down Jordy with two hands around his waist. He’s already been booked but it’s inexplicable how it’s not a straight red, never mind a booking which would take him off as well.

Rangers took him off at half-time which shows what they think. I can’t see how anyone who sees it on TV will think other than it’s a straight red. The dynamics of the game changes if he goes off.”
