Dermot Desmond's loaded Rangers sound bite confuses one punter as Celtic shareholder splits the room - Hotline

After a weekend of top six battles and drama it was Celtic's principal shareholder Dermot Desmond who was in the line of fire.

The Irishman's remarks about the Hoops boasting a continuous history in clear reference to Rangers haven't gone down well with some.

Bill Duncan, Ellon, said: "What point is Desmond trying to make, why now and who in particular is he trying to have a dig at?

"Someone should point out to him that Celtic aren't the only club that will have a continuous history and anyway, how many people really care?

Willie Mercer, Dumfries , said: "When it was all going pear-shaped last year and the Celtic support wanted some answers, Mr Desmond was nowhere to be seen or heard.

"On the cusp of winning the league he is suddenly Mr Celtic with plenty to say. Last season was the Holy Grail for every Celtic fan. If I was a Celtic fan I would be raging.

Derek Morris, Stirling, said: "Did Desmond mean that Celtic won’t change their name again, as they already did in 1994."

Steven Jackson emailed: "So Desmond says there will never be a new Celtic. Can he explain how when Fergus McCann took over their name changed from Celtic Football and Athletic Club to just Celtic Football Club. Whereas Rangers stayed as Rangers Football club."

Gerry Kelly emailed: "Here we go again with the yearly Alfredo Morelos transfer stories. Correct me if I'm wrong but if the striker is out for the season with an injury, surely no club is going to pay £20 million for the guy."

Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: "I see that the Celtic supporters are starting to talk up the profile of Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. "To refresh the memory, Bodo/Glimt beat Celtic 5-1 on aggregate in the Europa Conference League. Personally I thought they would have wanted to forget all about it but if they want to say that losing 5-1 to the Norwegians is acceptable then that's fine by me."

Chris Currie, Ayrshire , said: "One Hotline caller seems to not understand that coefficients are earned over a five year period and in that time Celtic have amassed more than Rangers. Can someone tell him tae take his wallies out and keep bumping his gums."

Steven Morrison emailed: "Hotline caller Jimmy Mac seriously needs to get a grip. Celtic were the best team all over the park in the Old Firm game and both goals were as a result of continuous and solid Celtic pressure. There can be no doubt now that last year was a fluke, Celtic are the true champions of Scottish football."

Philip Barnes emailed: "Giorgos Giakoumakis should not worry too much about what Ryan Jack says as he is the biggest underachiever at Ibrox. Jack says it was disrespectful but what was kicking a water bottle and his training top along the touchline because he was substituted by his manager? Now that’s disrespectful."

David Cook, Edinburgh, said: "The beach balls will be out big time next week if we beat the wee Edinburgh team next week at Hampden. Well done Hearts and Robbie Neilson who I have to admit I gave stick to in the past, congratulations for a great season."

Ian McDonald, Innerleithen, said: "The Hibs fans tried to ridicule Andy Halliday on Saturday but look at how it backfired. He was immense. As the song goes, we're all going on an Andy Halliday."

A final call on the Sunday Mail's Leigh Griffiths interview.

John Scott, Grassmoor, said: "I've seen some great players grace the pitch at Easter Road and Leigh was one of them.

"He single handedly dragged along a dire Hibs team in 2013 which culminated in a SFWA player of year award for his efforts. The first Hibs player to receive the award since Pat Stanton in 1970. Even then he had altercations with fans resulting in reprimands from Pat Fenlon.

"His potential flourished at Celtic and his two goals against England the obvious highlight of his career. Yet only he knows why he has failed to finish at the highest level."
