Dermot Bannon says he would rather 'gouge' his eyes out than spend weekend on DIY

Dermot Bannon would rather “gouge” his own eyes out than spend weekends looking at tiles.

The Room To Improve star also said he struggles to cut his own grass.

The celebrity architect revealed that when he has some downtime away from the show and running his business, Dermot Bannon Architects, he doesn’t do a tap of work to his own home.

He told us: “I don’t do any decorating. I struggle to cut the grass.

“The idea of me going to a tile show at the weekend for the craic – I would rather gouge my eyes out.

“At the weekends, I do the washing, the ironing, and cooking dinner. I am not one of these people who think, ‘I must tackle that room’ or do something in the house. I’ve never ever had – I used to when I was younger before it became my job – I used to love making things, all of that now is gone out the window because I do it for a living and it is my Monday to Friday 9 to 5.

“I have no interest in doing it on the weekend.

“I can do it, I can put up a shelf and fix most things but my God, I would rather do anything else.”

Dermot previously aired a two-part special where viewers saw him renovate his home in Drumcondra in Dublin.

But he admitted if it wasn’t for the pressures of the TV show, he may have never finished the renovations.

Dermot added: “That is why I did our house on television because I knew I would have to get it up to a certain standard.

“I knew once I moved in, I would not do another stroke.

“By putting it on television, it meant that I was under immense pressure to get it up to a certain standard.

“We’ve been in the house for two years, and most of that was during lockdown and there are still boxes that need to be unpacked.”

Dermot previously said he knows what it is like to renovate a home with little or no money – as he defended criticism of the hit show’s budgets.

He previously revealed he only had €7,000 to renovate the first home he ever bought with his wife, Louise.

The Dubliner said: “The first house we ever bought was in bad nick. We had no money. We had to do it ourselves.

“I built the kitchen, I plastered walls. The only thing we had money for was new windows.

“Louise’s family did the rewiring. Friends of Louise’s dad did the re-plumbing. We really hauled in every favour we could. We used to get the lads from the office to come out on the weekend and offer them pizza so they would dig up the garden.”
