Derelict pub next to booming beach takes step closer to reopening

A derelict pub next to a busy beach has taken a step closer to reopening.

The Sands pub in Ainsdale was listed with Savills estate agents, with potential tenants asked to send in their plans for the pub before July 1 this year. The pub was available for a 125-year-long leasehold with proposals for the redevelopment encouraged over a number of months this summer.

Sefton Council listed the pub with the hope of finding someone who will transform it. Should the proposals be accepted by the council, the preferred developer will be granted a building licence whereby, on completion of the redevelopment work, the leasehold would be granted.

Now, the council has revealed that a shortlist is in the process of being compiled, although it is unable to give a timeframe for when the building will be officially taken over and redesigned. A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: "The Sands, Ainsdale investment project is progressing as planned.

"We are currently assessing and scrutinising potential shortlisted applicants on their proposals. This is a detailed process and we are keen to ensure the successful proposal is both financially viable and properly utilises the incredible potential of this historic gateway building."

The listing at the time said: "The former hotel is situated on the Coastal Road between Southport and Formby. It has a large car park and is within walking distance of Ainsdale Station. It is handy for walkers and cyclists using the Sefton Coastal Path (Crosby to Crossens), the Trans Pennine Trail and the soon-to-be-opened section of the England Coast Path.

"On the instructions of Sefton MBC we are offering the former Sands Public House as a redevelopment opportunity. We are seeking proposals for this important gateway location with a prominent position close to the nearby leisure amnesties of Ainsdale beach.

"Redevelopment proposals & offers are to be received by no later than Friday 1st July 2022. Once selected the preferred developer will initially be granted a Building Licence, whereby on completion of the redevelopment the new 125-year-long leasehold title would be granted."
