A derelict building in the heart of Dumfries is set to be transformed into a Robert Burns museum.
And it is hoped the attraction could bring visitors from across the world – to The Globe.
Robert Burns’ Globe Inn Ltd has been giving planning permission to use the bakehouse building on Globe Close as a museum, exhibition and conference centre.
However, plans to change the look of the outside of the building will need to wait.
Planning documents described the building as in “a state of neglect”, with the firm wanting to replace the roof and make other improvements to the structure.
The report added: “This will form the heart of the Dumfries Burns’ quarter. The project aims to bring local, national and international visitors to Dumfries town centre building on the legacy of Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns. This investment will not only act as a catalyst for Burns enthusiasts visiting the area but will also bring much needed footfall to Dumfries town centre and Dumfries and Galloway.”
A report by planners states: “The proposed external alterations would not be appropriate, failing to preserve or enhance the character of Dumfries conservation area and detrimental to the immediate setting of the category A Listed Globe Inn.”
