Derek McInnes insisted he is angry and embarrassed by Aberdeen’s misfiring form – as sections of his own support turned on him again.
The Dons drew a blank in today's Scottish Cup clash with Kilmarnock and took their run to five matches without a goal.
Aberdeen have now gone 454 minutes without a goal and their last strike from open play came 639 minutes ago.
It was too much for some fans who shouted for their manager to go after the goal-less draw at St Mirren and some of the supporters – in the Red Shed – chanted “Derek, Derek get to f*** and “We are f*****g s***” at the end of yesterday’s game Some of the other fans, in fairness, tried to drown out the negative chants out but it was clearly audible around Pittodrie.
McInnes said: “We were good up to a point but I’m angry and embarrassed we haven’t scored again.”
The Aberdeen manager admitted he deserves to take it in the neck.
He added: “I understand it. If you don’t score in five games you deserve stick.
“My players need to take more responsibility but I’m in charge of the team.
“We set-up to be positive and score goals.
“Key decisions could help us but I totally understand it.
“I’ve been under pressure as a manager since I took over at St Johnstone. I listen to key guys in the game who say we’re not far away but it’s difficult to defend when you don’t score.
“We have set a standard and I still believe we will finish third in the league and have a cup run. That’s what we are working towards.
“I can’t criticise the effort. We’ve tried a front two and various ways to carry a threat but sometimes it comes down to quality and determination.”
McInnes has claimed this has been the toughest spell of his seven years at Pittodrie.
He stated: “This is the toughest period but football is like that.
Sometimes it is easy, you play rotten and win the game, and sometimes you need to work harder and believe in what you are doing.
“What we are doing Monday to Friday is right and we need to believe in that. Right now it is challenging and we have to work our way through it.
“The chairman has been supportive. He just wants a winning team like we all do but you are better off asking him.”
