Derek Carr Trade Framework Is in Place, per Report

Derek Carr spent Wednesday and Thursday visiting the Saints as he approaches his contract extension deadline with the Raiders next week.

The Raiders, where Carr has played his entire nine-year career, reportedly gave him permission on Friday to speak with teams that agreed to meet the terms that the team is seeking in a trade. So, Carr’s visits began with the Saints.

In the two days he’s been in New Orleans, Carr and the Saints already have the trade framework in place, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Thursday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported there was an “urgency” to have a trade in place soon, but an official trade is not expected to occur on Thursday.

Since the quarterback has a no-trade clause with the Raiders, this means Carr currently controls his destiny until Tuesday. It’s possible there won’t be an official trade until after 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The teams and Carr must decide by Wednesday, Feb. 15 whether to extend his contract with the Raiders or not as the quarterback will be owed $40 million guaranteed after that deadline. If Las Vegas fails to trade Carr by Feb. 15, the Raiders would then reportedly release him.

Carr has made it clear he does not want to stay in Las Vegas next season, as he’s already penned a goodbye message to Raiders fans.
