Dan Shapiro, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East and a former ambassador to Israel, is currently in Israel for a series of security meetings, as confirmed by the Pentagon on Monday.
Shapiro, who previously served as the US ambassador to Israel during the Obama administration, arrived in Israel on Sunday for a two-day visit. According to deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh, Shapiro's agenda includes meetings with the new Israeli Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, along with other key security and intelligence officials.
Shapiro's visit to Israel coincides with a crucial moment as the Israeli security cabinet prepares to vote on a potential ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. Recent indications from the US suggest that a resolution to the conflict in Israel may be within reach.
Prior to his trip to Israel, Shapiro had been in the United Arab Emirates for a two-day session of meetings with Emirati defense officials. Singh noted that discussions in the UAE focused on enhancing the bilateral defense relationship between the two nations.
