The Department of Government Efficiency has uncovered approximately $80 million in what they deem as “wasteful spending” within the Defense Department, according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell. This amount represents less than 0.01% of the Pentagon’s total budget, which stands at around $850 billion.
Parnell expressed confidence that these initial findings could lead to significant savings by eliminating the identified wasteful expenditures. He highlighted specific programs that were flagged by the Department of Government Efficiency, a part of the DOGE initiative led by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to streamline government operations.
Among the programs mentioned was $1.9 million allocated by the Air Force for “wholistic DEI transformation and training,” as well as $1.6 million designated to the University of Florida for research on social and institutional factors affecting vulnerability and resilience to climate hazards in the African Sahel region.
Parnell criticized these programs as distractions from the core mission of the Pentagon, emphasizing the need to prioritize resources effectively.
The Department of Government Efficiency's discovery of $80 million in potentially wasteful spending underscores ongoing efforts to enhance fiscal responsibility and operational efficiency within the Defense Department.
