Department called into question over a number of "key planning decisions" in Derry

The Department for Infrastructure has been called into question for the timekeeping of a number of major developments in Derry.

SDLP councillor Brian Tierney said has written to the DfI about several projects including the Buncrana Road Greenway and 258 social housing units on the Springtown Road in Derry.

All of the projects have been backed by the council and Councillor Tierney asked the department to detail their reasons for the current delays.

Councillor Tierney said: “After a number of delays to key infrastructure projects across our council area, I have written directly to the department to ask them for an update and to spell out their reasons for the current delays.

"These projects have been in the works for a long time and it’s important that they are not unnecessarily delayed.

“When built these projects will make a real difference to people living in this area, new businesses will lead to much-needed employment opportunities, while this area is crying out for more social housing with waiting lists getting longer all the time.

"Much work has gone into all of these planning applications, with years of groundwork being done in some instances, and it’s unacceptable that they have been beset with delays and very little communication from the department.

"I hope to receive a prompt response to my letter with an update for everybody concerned so we can get on with making these projects a reality, with work hopefully starting in the near future.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Department said that it was currently "finalising its consideration" in regards to the major housing development.

"The Department hopes to respond to the council as soon as possible with a decision as to whether or not the planning application should be ‘called in’ to the Department for determination.”
