Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has made headlines for his strong opposition to the Trump mass-deportation plan, even stating that he would be willing to go to jail over it. A recent study conducted by the Common Sense Institute (CSI) revealed that the city of Denver has spent a significant $356 million on migrants, equating to $7,900 per foreign national in the city.
The study, based on city data, found that this sum represents 8% of Denver's 2025 budget of $4.4 billion. The expenses encompass various sectors such as education, healthcare, hotels, transportation, and childcare. The city has experienced a surge in migrant arrivals under the Biden-Harris administration, leading Mayor Johnston to make budget cuts in city services to accommodate the newcomers.
Education emerged as the primary area of expenditure, with around 45,000 migrants arriving in the Denver metro area since December 2022. Of these, 16,197 migrant students have enrolled in Denver metro schools, costing the city an estimated $228 million annually. The strain on the healthcare system has also been significant, with emergency departments delivering approximately $49 million in uncompensated care to migrants.
Despite initial estimates suggesting a $180 million expenditure through 2024, the city's actual spending is projected to be around $79 million. The funds have been allocated to facilities, personnel, services, and food, among other necessities.
Mayor Johnston's staunch stance against what he deems as illegal, immoral, or un-American policies, including the use of military force, has drawn attention. He expressed readiness to face consequences for his beliefs, even if it means going to jail. Former Trump administration official Tom Homan warned that Johnston could face legal repercussions for shielding illegal migrants, citing the law.
