Dennis Bergkamp forced to intervene over Donny van de Beek's Man Utd transfer

Dennis Bergkamp is trying to persuade his former Arsenal team-mate Patrick Vieira to sign Donny van de Beek on loan.

Van de Beek, 24, wants to leave Manchester United in January in pursuit of regular football ahead of this year's World Cup in Qatar.

The Netherlands international has made just four Premier League starts since joining the Red Devils from Ajax in September 2020.

Vieira is currently the manager of Crystal Palace and is interested in brining Van de Beek to Selhurst Park this month.

And Bergkamp - who played alongside Vieira at Highbury for nine years - is hoping to secure a deal for his family member.

Van de Beek is dating Bergkamp's daughter Estelle, with the couple expecting their first child later this year.

According to Sky Sports News, Bergkamp has contacted Vieira about the midfielder and the Palace manager is keen on finalising a move.

Valencia are also thought to be interested in a loan deal until the end of the season.

United manager Ralf Rangnick has previously stated his desire to keep Van de Beek at Old Trafford until the summer.

"I'm glad to have him in the squad," said Rangnick earlier this month. "He is always performing at a high level in training.

"I had a conversation with him after training two weeks ago and advised him to stay. With the World Cup coming up in the winter, he wants to play."

It's believed Rangnick will reluctantly allow Van de Beek to leave Old Trafford in January - if a loan fee is paid and his wages are covered.

That could be a problem, however. The Dutchman's reportedly salary is £120,000-a-week. Only Wilfried Zaha - £130,000-a-week - is said to be earning more at Palace.

The loan fee could also prove expensive. United spent an initial £35million on Van de Beek, tying him down to a five-year deal. Presuming his valuation hasn't decreased, the Red Devils are likely to want a tenth of that fee - £3.5m - in return for six months of his contract.

Van de Beek may have to take a wage cut if he wants to leave. He is expected to discuss his long-term future with United in the summer when a permanent manager is appointed.

Speaking about his relationship with the midfielder last March, Bergkamp said: "In my first season when I became a youth coach [at Ajax], Donny was in my team when he was 11 or 12.

Then I already had an eye on him, so I know how he is and I can protect my daughter if I need to [he jokes]."

Discussing Van de Beek's future last October, former Premier League manager Alex McLeish urged him to leave United in January.

"Donny van de Beek will be losing confidence, that is a massive factor for any individual in any sport or walk of life they’re in," said McLeish.

"Confidence breeds success. That kid will be feeling unworthy... he has to go and get regular football for his own sake and his own health, fitness levels and to show his prowess."
