Dennis Allen has a funny explanation for Cameron Jordan’s absence at Saints minicamp

It means a lot to young players to see their older teammates participating in the voluntary parts of offseason work, and Cameron Jordan was standing front-and-center for organized team activities earlier this offseason. But the venerable New Orleans Saints defensive end was one of the few veterans not seen at the team’s Ochsner Sports Performance Center on Wednesday.

Jordan was available but did not participate in team drills on Tuesday, and he wasn’t spotted on the field at all during Wednesday’s session. Saints head coach Dennis Allen acknowledged his absence with a quip after practice, when asked whether it was injury-related.

“Yeah, I’d call it old age-related,” Allen joked, “You know? Look, Cam’s fine. He’ll be fine.”

Frankly, these spring training sessions feature few opportunities for trench players like Jordan. With contact limited and players not even wearing shoulder pads, it’s more like an extended cardio workout for many of them than anything. So giving Jordan a day off after he made a good example and showed up for every voluntary workout thus far makes sense. With young players behind him like Isaiah Foskey and Payton Turner chomping at the bit, his absence frees up what meaningful practice reps there are for those who need it most.
