Denise Welch defends Ant and Dec with her dad's history of drag

Denise Welch has defended Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly's latest performance on Saturday Night Takeaway.

The two Geordie presenters took to the stage as their alter egos, Lady Antoinette and Miss Donna Lee, otherwise known as The Angels of the North.

Joined by Liverpool's The Vivienne and two other winning queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Lawrence Chaney and Krystal Versace, the group performed a charity single titled, We Werk Together.

It was later revealed the performance was hit with complaints from TV watchdog, Ofcom. Despite this, many enjoyed the show including Denise Welch.

In a discussion which aired on Thursday’s Loose Women, the presenter defended the drag routine before discussing her late father's history with the gay community.

The 63-year-old detailed how her father, Vin, ‘loved the gay community,’ and had a drag persona of his own, known as Raquel.

She added: “He loved my gay friends, he loved the community. People said your dad must be gay but he hasn’t, he was a straight drag artist.”

Speaking about the backlash to the performance, Denise suggested to “cancel fun 100%” so others would have nothing to complain about.

Co-star Carol McGiffin agreed and said: “I can’t live in this world anymore, I can’t.”

The Loose Women panel watched a clip of Denise’s father surprising her on the show a few years ago dressed in his drag attire to which Denise ended her rant by saying: “I’d like to meet the 59 people out of 68 million who complained about it.”

Ant and Dec claimed earlier in the show that it would be the first time in the show's history they wouldn't be starring in the final instalment.

Much to everyone's surprise, the hosts later stole the show with Ant transforming into a red-head and donning a black sparkly outfit and Dec rocking a blonde wig, red lipstick and a blue feather dress.

All the proceedings from the single are being donated to the Trussel Trust, a UK charity which works towards ending hunger and poverty.
