Denise Welch causes Loose Women 'panic with Geordie joke as co-stars concerned over punchline

Denise Welch was left wishing there were a few Geordies in the Loose Women studio on Tuesday, as a joke she cracked fell rather flat with the rest of the panel, after host Jane Moore had raised concerns that the punchline might not be suitable for daytime television..

Having recently turned 65, completed a stint on the run for the new series of Celebrity Hunted and had a trip abroad, Denise was back on the ITV lunchtime programme for its second show of the week, joining anchor Jane and colleagues Janet Street-Porter and Frankie Bridge. Topics discussed on the show ranged from people over the age of 65 been told to come out of retirement to people's desire to want to please their in-laws, with Jane forced to issue a correction on a viewer poll relating to the latter..

Something else debated on Tuesday's Loose Women was whether or not 'the old jokes are still the best' and Denise was the first to air her thoughts, claiming that if a joke is actually any good it should always be funny. And, with that in mind, the North East born star then got ready to launch into her quintessentially Geordie gag, with her telling her co-stars: "I've told this one before."

Upon hearing that, Janet exclaimed: "Oh no!" as presenter Jane asked her: "It's not one of you rude ones?" with Frankie quizzing: "Is it allowed?" After assuring the rest of the panel that she wasn't about to turn the air blue, Denise began: "A little old Geordie woman goes to the doctors and she says 'Doctor, every time I lift me arm up, it stinks like coconut,; and he says 'It's boun'tee.'

While there was laughter from the audience in front of her, completely missing the pun on the Bounty chocolate bar and Denise's Geordie pronunciation, a baffled Janet asked Denise: "Can you explain that to me," as Jane quipped: "Other chocolate bars are available!" Trying to get the joke to make sense to Janet, Denise told her: "IT's bound to is 'it's boun'tee in Geordie,' before giving up, and sarcastically adding: "Go on Janet then, tell us one of your crackers."
