Demolition of long derelict Cardiff building begins to make way for student flats

Demolition work has started on a derelict building in Cardiff to make way for flats.

Work has begun on demolishing the vacant building off Minny Street in the Cathays area of the city to make way for student accommodation.

Full planning permission was allowed on appeal for the proposed demolition of the former laundry building to be replaced with student accommodation back in 2017.

Planning permission was initially refused in 2016 for the proposed demolition of the building. A demolition notice for the site was published as part of the planning application for the site on January 19 this year.

Plans were submitted back in 2016 to construct 16 dwellings on the site, including 10 two-bedroom flats, five one-bedroom flats, and one four-bedroom flat.

"The applicant's vision for the development of the site is to create a new housing development which has its own identity and sense of place and enclosure, but fits in sympathetically with the existing urban layout of the adjacent housing," the design and access statement for the application reads.

"The site's location makes it an ideal sustainable location for future student residents in a bespoke development rather than some of the existing terrace housing that have been converted to housing occupied by students."

The flats are set to be distributed across two storeys, with a set back third floor.

When a planning application for the site was submitted in 2016, it was faced with objection comments from residents as well as a petition of objection against the application, which was signed by 65 residents.

A former office block on Cathays Terrace is also set to become a 24-bedroom student block, with the latest proposals for the site showing bicycle parking, refuse storage, and a parking and traffic management plan.
