Demolition of former Dumbarton care home to take place within months

The demolition of a former Dumbarton care home will take place in the next two months to make way for more affordable housing.

Willox Care Home and its associated outbuildings, which have lain empty since 2017, will be demolished by George Beattie & Sons Ltd as West Dunbartonshire Council continues its affordable housing project.

So far the local authority has delivered 467 new homes since 2013 in Clydebank, Alexandria and Dumbarton with a further 144 properties scheduled to be developed by the end of August 2023.

During the housing and communities committee yesterday (Wednesday) it was confirmed that sites earmarked for development included Willox Park, Bank Street, Mount Pleasant and Dennistoun Forge.

Labour councillor David McBride said: “Can I just ask what the current plans are for Willox Park as there is quite a lot of speculation that the buildings are getting flattened and I am not aware of that.

“I think the current housing stock does need some development and I would appreciate being kept up to date with that.”

It was confirmed that the old care home site would be demolished to make way for new builds and the community will be asked to engage in the development of a masterplan for the area.

John Kerr, housing development and homelessness manager, said: “We will develop new homes on that specific site. When we were doing our community engagement it was felt that the whole area would benefit from a regeneration masterplan.

“At the moment they are two different projects. We will deliver on the care home site but we will also have a more holistic plan for the whole of the Willox Park area.

“The community will be heavily involved in that going forward. In the meantime the new build development will progress in terms of the former care home site. Steps are in place for demolition to happen over the course of the next couple of months.”
