Demolition of crumbling Dumfries town centre building set to resume

Demolition work will resume soon on a derelict Dumfries town centre building.

The dangerous former Treasure Cave store (right) has been worked on by Westlakes Demolition until it became unsafe amid collapse fears. The building stretches from English Street through to Shakespeare Street and at that part it has become dangerous prompting workers to add extensive shoring.

And the company revealed on Facebook: “We have completed the first stage of the shoring at Shakespeare Street, the second level of shoring will be added in the next couple of days then demolition works can start again.”

Shops are open in English Street although traffic is reduced to one lane with diversions in place. A council spokeswoman said: “Traffic measures will remain in place until Sunday, June 19 at 6pm.

"This is subject to change. Our webpage – www.dumgal.gov.uk/treasurecave – has been updated with this information.

"There people can find a map and explanation of the traffic measures Dumfries and Galloway Council has put in place to ensure public safety.”
