As the March 14 deadline to fund the government nears, Democrats and Republicans are engaged in negotiations to reach a spending agreement. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized that the responsibility lies with the GOP to ensure the government remains open and functional, given their control of the presidency, the House, and the Senate.
Jeffries highlighted the Democrats' focus on meeting the needs of the American people, including health, safety, national security, and economic well-being. He mentioned ongoing discussions between Democratic appropriator Rep. Rosa DeLauro and GOP House colleagues and senators, indicating a willingness to find common ground.

While conversations with the Trump administration have not yet taken place, Jeffries anticipates increased dialogue across party lines as the funding deadline approaches. He criticized a recent GOP-led plan to advance President Trump's legislative agenda as 'out of control' and a 'non-starter.'
The looming deadline has raised concerns about a potential government shutdown, with Jeffries warning that past shutdowns have been instigated by Republicans. However, Democrats are committed to working towards a resolution that serves the best interests of the American people.
