Before Biden exited the race, only about 4 in 10 Democrats expressed satisfaction with him as the likely nominee. The rapid shift in sentiment underscores the party's swift consolidation around Harris, driven by her fresh perspective and growing confidence in the party's chances against former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
Democrats across various demographics, including Black and Hispanic adults, have shown increased satisfaction with Harris compared to earlier sentiments towards Biden. Younger adults, in particular, have demonstrated higher levels of satisfaction with Harris as a potential nominee.
The poll also indicates a rise in Harris' overall favorability, with Democrats viewing her in an increasingly positive light. Harris, if elected, would make history as the first woman, first Black woman, first South Asian American, and first Asian American president.
While most Americans approve of Biden's decision to withdraw from the race, opinions on his endorsement of Harris as the nominee are more divided. Despite withdrawing, Biden's overall approval ratings have remained relatively stable.
Looking ahead to the election, Americans perceive Trump as having an advantage over Harris, with a majority believing Trump is more likely to win. However, some Democrats remain optimistic about Harris' chances while acknowledging the challenges ahead.
The poll, conducted from July 25-29, 2024, surveyed 1,143 adults and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
