Democrats have named their members to serve on the House Oversight Subcommittee for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and have expressed their commitment to defending critical federal programs against potential cuts.
The DOGE agency, a key initiative of President Donald Trump's reelection campaign, aims to reduce government waste and enhance transparency in government spending. Established through an executive order on Monday, the agency is set to play a significant role in improving government efficiency.
Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., will lead the subcommittee as the ranking member, accompanied by Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas. Additionally, Eleanor Holmes Norton, a non-voting congressional delegate for Washington, D.C., will be part of the team. Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., will also participate in an ex officio capacity.
Stansbury emphasized the Democrats' commitment to leveraging all available resources to collaborate across party lines and oppose policies that could harm Americans. She highlighted the importance of enhancing government efficiency and ensuring federal agencies operate effectively.
Garcia echoed Stansbury's sentiments, expressing his determination to counter the House GOP's proposals to target the federal workforce and cut essential programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. He criticized Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., the subcommittee chair, for advocating extreme measures such as eliminating the Department of Education and programs for seniors and veterans.
On the Republican side, Greene announced members selected to serve on the subcommittee, including Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, and others. Greene emphasized their collective dedication to enhancing government accountability and efficiency by eliminating waste and mismanagement within federal agencies.
Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is stepping down from his role in the DOGE department to pursue a potential Republican campaign for Ohio governor. His departure aligns with the department's structure, which requires individuals running for elected office to maintain a separation from DOGE responsibilities.
The developments within the House Oversight Subcommittee for the Department of Government Efficiency underscore the ongoing efforts to streamline government operations and ensure transparency in federal spending.
