Rep. Jamaal Bowman, known for his liberal stance, is facing a tough Democratic primary challenge from moderate county executive George Latimer in New York. The race has highlighted divisions within the party over the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Latimer entered the race following pressure from Jewish leaders unhappy with Bowman's criticism of Israel. A significant amount of money, largely linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), has poured into the race to oppose Bowman after his comments on Israel's actions in Gaza.

AIPAC's super PAC has spent close to $15 million on attack ads against Bowman, who has accused the lobbying group of trying to influence the election in the suburban district north of New York City.

The primary outcome will have significant implications, as the winner will be heavily favored to win in the general election in the Democratic stronghold district that includes parts of Westchester County and the Bronx.

The race has become a focal point for the party's stance on Israel and has underscored the ongoing tensions between liberal and centrist factions within the Democratic Party.

Latimer, with over three decades of political experience, has emphasized his knowledge of the district and relationships as key assets for effective representation in Congress. He has positioned himself as a strong supporter of Israel, advocating against negotiating with Hamas.

Bowman, a former educator, has framed the contest as a battle between grassroots support and big-money interests. He has stood by his views on Israel, calling for a cease-fire and condemning Hamas attacks.

The primary race reflects broader national trends, with Democratic leaders focusing on centrist candidates for suburban races. Another key primary in New York involves former CNN pundit John Avlon and scientist Nancy Goroff vying for a seat currently held by Rep. Nick LaLota.

Overall, the New York primaries will provide insights into the party's direction and strategy as it seeks to secure key congressional seats in the upcoming elections.
