Democratic Party Chair Resigns After Allegedly Stealing Trump Signs

Donald Trump - Trump meets with supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida

A Democratic Party chair in North Carolina, Lowell Simon, recently resigned from his position after being arrested for allegedly removing and stealing roadside signs supporting former President Donald Trump. Simon, who also happens to be running for North Carolina House in November, faced two counts of misdemeanor larceny of political signs.

The Moore County Democratic Party announced Simon's resignation following the allegations and arrest related to the sign theft. The incident unfolded when a deputy observed Simon removing campaign signs from the roadside and later found them in his vehicle at his residence. Simon admitted to the act, leading to his arrest and subsequent release with a court appearance scheduled for October 30.

While acknowledging Simon's past dedication, the Moore County Democratic Party emphasized that they do not condone illegal activities such as tampering with political signs. Simon expressed regret for his actions, attributing them to a momentary lapse in judgment.

Simon's actions were reportedly triggered by the obstruction of signs he had placed in support of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding freedom of expression and speech, with the local party urging fair enforcement of laws protecting these rights.

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields, a Republican, reiterated that the removal or theft of campaign signs violates North Carolina General Statute § 136-32(e), which safeguards the lawful placement of signs during election periods.

As the community navigates through this incident, the focus remains on promoting democratic values and working towards a better future for all residents of Moore County. The party reaffirmed its commitment to electing Democrats in the upcoming election, emphasizing justice, fairness, and freedom as core principles.
