The Democratic National Convention Committee has made a historic announcement, revealing that social media content creators will have the opportunity to apply for credentials to cover the 2024 convention in Chicago. This marks the first time in history that content creators will be granted access to cover the convention alongside traditional media outlets.
According to convention committee officials, this decision is driven by the significant impact content creators have had on the way Americans consume information and content. By allowing content creators to participate, the committee aims to level the playing field between them and traditional media, ensuring that a broader audience can engage with this crucial aspect of the Democratic process.
Cayana Mackey-Nance, the Democratic National Convention Committee's director of digital strategy, emphasized the importance of this move in reaching out to young voters. Recent data from the Harvard Institute of Politics revealed that a substantial portion of adults aged 18-29 rely on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok for news consumption.
Matt Hill, the DNCC's senior director of communications, highlighted the committee's commitment to meeting Americans where they are and ensuring that critical information about the upcoming election is accessible across various content platforms.
Youth voters are expected to play a pivotal role in the 2024 election, with recent polls indicating a close race between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump among likely voters aged 18-29. In the 2020 election, exit poll results showed a majority of voters in this age group supported Biden over Trump.
The 2024 convention, scheduled for August 19 to 22, is anticipated to attract around 50,000 visitors, including delegates, media representatives, and vendors. The event in Chicago will serve as the platform for Democrats to officially nominate Biden for reelection.
