A number of Democratic lawmakers have chosen not to attend Donald Trump’s address to Congress tonight, demonstrating a growing trend of opposition to the president within the party.
Democratic Rep. Becca Balint, along with Democratic Sens. Chris Murphy, Brian Schatz, Ed Markey, and Angela Alsobrooks, will be hosting their own event in response. The event is set to feature real-time fact-checking, a Democratic pre-buttal, and live reactions, as per a news release from Balint’s office.
In a statement, Balint, who was present at Trump’s inauguration, expressed her decision by stating, “I watched as the President swore an oath to uphold and protect the constitution. I won’t sit and watch him lie to the American people again. My conversation tonight will be the best way I can use my voice for Vermonters. They are sick of the lies and Trump’s complete and utter disregard for our constitution.”

Additionally, Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters announced that she will also be skipping the president’s speech, asserting that Trump should face trial for treason due to his alleged alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin. Waters criticized Trump, calling him a dishonorable and deceitful individual who should be held accountable for his actions.
Waters emphasized that this is not the first time she has chosen to boycott one of Trump’s speeches, citing her strong disapproval of his conduct and policies.
