Washington state experienced a historic election Tuesday night, as the first-ever openly LGBTQ+ Latina was elected to the U.S. Congress.
Emily Randall, a two-term state senator, campaigned on issues like reproductive freedom, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ rights, the Advocate reported. On November 5, Randall successfully secured Washington State's Sixth District seat in a decisive victory.
Her victory over Republican Drew MacEwen marks a historic shift for the district, which was previously held by Democrat Derek Kilmer.
"We did more than win this election: we made history," Randall said. "Together, we shattered three glass ceilings. When I take office in January, I will become the first congresswoman and first person of color to hold this seat, the first openly LGBTQ person to represent Washington State in Congress, and the first ever queer Latina member of Congress."
Not only is Randall the first openly LGBTQ+ person from Washington to serve in Congress but also the first person of color to hold this seat.
As she prepares to take office in January, Randall's focus will be on legislative priorities including expanding healthcare access, protecting reproductive rights, and fighting for immigration reform.
