Two Democratic governors, who are being considered as potential running mates for Vice President Kamala Harris, have criticized Iowa's strict abortion law that went into effect on Monday. The law prohibits most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker took to social media to express their disapproval of the new law. Shapiro directly attributed the law to former President Donald Trump, calling it a restriction on 'every woman's freedom to choose.'
Shapiro stated, 'Another abortion ban brought to you by Donald Trump. We cannot let him back in the White House and we must restore every woman's freedom to choose.'
Pritzker, whose state borders Iowa, urged Iowa women affected by the law to seek care in Illinois. He reassured them that Illinois would welcome them for reproductive freedom and any necessary care.
Pritzker wrote, 'Iowa's disturbing 6-week abortion ban goes into effect today. Here in Illinois, we will welcome our Iowan neighbors for reproductive freedom and whatever care they need. Please know - as you work to maneuver around this dangerous and unjust law - we are here for you.'
These statements come as the Harris campaign aims to elevate abortion access as a key issue in the upcoming November election, especially following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022.
